AI Engineer (Level 6) - Pharma Technical Operations

About the role

Roche is hiring an AI Engineer (Level 6) in its AI Engineering Cluster in Basel. This senior, hands-on technical role designs, delivers, evaluates and operates AI solutions across Pharma Technical Operations, partnering with business, IT, quality and technical experts to turn operational challenges into reliable, scalable and compliant AI-enabled products.

Key responsibilities

• Own end-to-end delivery of AI solutions, from design and build through deployment, monitoring, evaluation and continuous improvement
• Design scalable AI architectures, including data flows, model integration, GenAI orchestration, APIs, user interfaces, agent workflows and production infrastructure
• Build GenAI and agentic AI solutions such as RAG, multi-step workflows, tool-using agents and LLM orchestration
• Apply engineering practices such as automated testing, code reviews, CI/CD, observability and documentation
• Design evaluation frameworks and AI harnesses for benchmarking, validation and comparison of models, prompts and retrieval strategies
• Manage deployed agents across their lifecycle, including versioning, release management, monitoring, incident response and retirement
• Implement observability for AI systems covering quality, cost, latency, drift, hallucination risk and operational reliability
• Lead experiments comparing foundation models, prompts, embeddings, retrieval approaches and agent configurations
• Work with business, process and site teams to prototype and integrate AI solutions, then share reusable patterns and components
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute engineering standards and guidelines for the cluster
• Ensure solutions meet compliance, validation, security, privacy, data governance and responsible AI requirements

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, engineering, mathematics or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
• Demonstrated track record of independently delivering production-grade software, AI, machine learning, data or analytics solutions
• Strong hands-on Python expertise
