AI Scientist – AI-Driven Target Identification

About the role

The Oncology Data Science team at Novartis is seeking an AI/ML scientist to apply advanced AI approaches to multi‑modal datasets, supporting target and biomarker discovery in oncology drug development.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and implement machine learning algorithms and AI models to extract predictive insights from pre‑clinical, clinical and real‑world evidence data.
• Demonstrate the value of innovative AI techniques for drug target identification, biomolecular interaction modeling and biomarker discovery.
• Work with foundational models—including pre‑trained, self‑supervised, multi‑purpose and multi‑modal models—to advance generative AI applications in drug discovery.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to establish best practices for ML‑ready data and contribute to scientific publications and conference presentations.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Biology or a related field.
• Strong research record with publications in top‑tier ML/AI conferences or scientific journals.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to convey complex data insights to multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Python programming.
• Deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
• Experience with generative AI, biomedical foundation models, geometric deep learning, multi‑modal learning and large‑scale knowledge graphs.
• Practical knowledge of the ML/LLM software stack, including feature engineering, model development, deployment and validation.
• Familiarity with omics data and oncology drug development pipelines.
