Controls and Automation Engineer – Energy Efficiency Project

About the role

The Cooling & Ventilation Group at CERN is launching a project to improve the energy efficiency and performance of its cooling, ventilation and hydraulic plants. As a Controls and Automation Engineer you will analyse plant operation, develop simulation models and design advanced control and AI‑based solutions to achieve measurable energy savings.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and validate dynamic simulation models of HVAC, cooling, ventilation and hydraulic systems to assess performance and identify optimisation opportunities.
• Design, test and implement advanced control strategies and AI‑based solutions to enhance energy efficiency, reliability and operational stability.
• Manage deployment, testing, commissioning and performance verification of selected solutions on operational production plants.
• Produce technical studies, engineering recommendations and performance assessments in collaboration with operations and maintenance teams.

Required profile

• Experience modelling and simulating HVAC, hydraulic or industrial processes using tools such as EcosimPro or Matlab/Simulink.
• Background in design, implementation, testing and commissioning of industrial control systems, preferably with advanced control techniques.
• Proficiency in Python for data analysis, machine‑learning or AI applications.
• Fluent English and willingness to learn French.

What we offer

• Monthly net stipend of 5 266 CHF or 5 793 CHF depending on degree.
