Hardware Support Engineer – Server Technologies

About the role

Join the Fabric and Communication Systems (FCS) group to operate and support a diverse set of server technologies within CERN's openlab heterogeneous architectures testbed. You will ensure optimal performance of existing hardware, assist scientific users, and integrate new technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and upgrade existing servers, ensuring reliability and performance.
• Provide first‑line support to scientific communities, answering queries and resolving issues.
• Debug and troubleshoot system problems to minimise downtime.
• Install, configure and integrate new server technologies into the testbed.
• Interact regularly with industry partners and organise topic‑oriented workshops.

Required profile

• Experience with computer systems including BIOS/UEFI, x86 and Arm architectures, virtualization, memory management and GPU computing.
• Knowledge of interconnects such as Ethernet and Infiniband and storage interfaces (SATA, SAS, NVMe).
• Familiarity with management and monitoring protocols like IPMI, Redfish, SMART and SNMP.
• Strong Linux system administration skills and proficiency in shell scripting.
• Demonstrated ability to develop scripts in Python.
• Eligibility: national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State, ≤2 years professional experience after a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering.
