About the role
The Language Assistant (English) supports the Language Services Unit of the Department of Governing Bodies at WHO by ensuring high‑quality translation, editing and proof‑reading of official documents. The role contributes to the smooth functioning of WHO’s governing bodies by delivering accurate, consistently formatted materials in English.
Key responsibilities
- Review and proofread documents, reports, tables, graphics and other materials for grammar, spelling, house style, references and terminology consistency.
- Check proofs after layout, confirming page layout, font choices and size are appropriate for both source and target languages.
- Coordinate with technical, editorial and translation staff to clarify terminology and resolve issues.
- Process and format documents using a variety of software, import and redesign graphics for master files, and prepare files for computer‑assisted translation (CAT).
- Store final documents in the official repository, align bilingual texts and maintain translation memories.
- Supervise temporary staff for governing‑body meetings, and assist in training and mentoring new team members.
Required profile
- Completion of secondary school education or equivalent (essential).
- Specialised courses in translation, editing or related fields are desirable.
Required skills
- Proficiency with computer‑assisted translation (CAT) tools.
- Strong document formatting and word‑processing abilities.
- Experience with graphic import and layout adjustment.
- Attention to detail for proofreading and terminology consistency.
