Legal Officer

About the role

The Legal Officer will work within the Judicial Support and Cooperation Section (JSCS) of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM). Reporting to the JSCS P4 Legal Officer‑RFA Coordinator, the incumbent will support the investigation and prosecution of serious crimes committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the P4 Legal Officer‑RFA Coordinator in managing Requests for Assistance (RFAs) and proactive sharing activities.
• Engage with judicial authorities to ensure timely responses to RFAs and keep requesting authorities informed of status and outcomes.
• Participate in evidence collection, prepare targeted collection requests, and support investigators in RFA‑related activities.
• Review analytical work related to RFAs and conduct legal analysis of evidence concerning violations of international humanitarian law and human rights.
• Organise the transmission of information, evidence, and analytical products in response to RFAs or proactive sharing.
• Prepare and negotiate cooperation frameworks with state and non‑state information providers.
• Develop processes, tools, policies, manuals and SOPs governing RFAs, information sharing, and cooperation frameworks, ensuring information‑security requirements are met.
• Liaise with all IIIM sections to facilitate collection, investigation, consolidation and analysis of relevant information.
• Provide legal and policy advice on information sharing, cooperation frameworks and multidisciplinary matters.
• Participate in briefings, conferences and workshops with internal and external stakeholders.
