Nautical Instructor – River Training (Switzerland)

About the role

The Nautical Instructor reports to the Team Leader and is responsible for developing future Viking captains through hands‑on, scenario‑based training. The role focuses on simulator‑based instruction (about 80% of activity) and requires extensive travel to training centres in Germany and Austria.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver simulator‑based training covering inland navigation, voyage planning, team communication and river‑specific regulations.
• Train students on propulsion, steering, radar, VHF, ECDIS, dynamic positioning and track‑pilot technologies under varying wind, current and water‑level conditions.
• Lead briefings, debriefings, assessments and performance reporting for promotion evaluations.
• Create and update simulator scenarios, integrate new technologies and support the digital training environment.
• Review and quality‑check training delivered by other instructors, providing feedback to maintain Viking standards.
• Conduct classroom, webinar and blended‑learning sessions on navigation, safety and emergency preparedness.

Required profile

• Qualified Captain in inland navigation with experience on the Rhine and Danube (Main and Moselle experience is a plus).
• Fluent in German and English; French is an asset.
• Patient, approachable, proactive, reliable and organized with strong communication skills.

Required skills

• Operation of inland navigation simulators and related training equipment.
• Proficiency with radar, VHF, ECDIS, dynamic positioning and track‑pilot systems.
• Good knowledge of Microsoft 365 suite (SharePoint, Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Word).
