About the role

We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join the newly founded high‑pressure chemistry group at the University of Bern’s Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The four‑year, full‑time position starts on 1 September 2026 and focuses on the physical chemistry of barocaloric materials using high‑pressure crystallography.

Key responsibilities

  • Synthesize organic and inorganic compounds with potential colossal barocaloric response.
  • Perform high‑pressure differential scanning calorimetry measurements.
  • Conduct high‑pressure single‑crystal X‑ray diffraction experiments on in‑house equipment and at synchrotron facilities.
  • Analyze structural data and contribute to scientific publications.
  • Participate in teaching activities within the department.

Required profile

  • University Master’s degree (or equivalent) in natural sciences, preferably chemistry or physics.
  • Fluency in English with strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Technical aptitude for microscope work and computer‑based data analysis.

Required skills

  • X‑ray structure determination / single‑crystal X‑ray diffraction.
  • Material synthesis (organic and inorganic).
  • Microscope operation.
  • Proficiency with scientific software.
