About the role
We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join the newly founded high‑pressure chemistry group at the University of Bern’s Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The four‑year, full‑time position starts on 1 September 2026 and focuses on the physical chemistry of barocaloric materials using high‑pressure crystallography.
Key responsibilities
- Synthesize organic and inorganic compounds with potential colossal barocaloric response.
- Perform high‑pressure differential scanning calorimetry measurements.
- Conduct high‑pressure single‑crystal X‑ray diffraction experiments on in‑house equipment and at synchrotron facilities.
- Analyze structural data and contribute to scientific publications.
- Participate in teaching activities within the department.
Required profile
- University Master’s degree (or equivalent) in natural sciences, preferably chemistry or physics.
- Fluency in English with strong written and oral communication skills.
- Technical aptitude for microscope work and computer‑based data analysis.
Required skills
- High‑pressure technology.
- High‑pressure differential scanning calorimetry.
- X‑ray structure determination / single‑crystal X‑ray diffraction.
- Material synthesis (organic and inorganic).
- Microscope operation.
- Proficiency with scientific software.
