PhD position in vibrational and optoelectronic properties of quasi-1D chalcogenides

About the role

The Nanomaterials Spectroscopy and Imaging Group at Empa seeks a PhD student to study quasi‑1D chalcogenide semiconductors. The research focuses on how composition, defects and chain alignment affect vibrational, optical and carrier‑dynamic properties in single crystals and oriented thin films.

Key responsibilities

• Perform Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy, including polarization‑ and temperature‑dependent measurements.
• Characterize optical properties and carrier dynamics using time‑resolved photoluminescence, terahertz spectroscopy and transient absorption.
• Develop data‑analysis approaches to correlate results from complementary techniques.
• Collaborate with synthesis, theory and device partners and publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals and conferences.

Required profile

• Master's degree in physics, materials science, chemistry, nanoscience or a closely related field.
• Strong interest in optical spectroscopy, semiconductor physics and low‑dimensional or quantum materials.
• Self‑motivated, organized, able to work independently and within an interdisciplinary international team.
• Excellent written and spoken English and willingness to undertake a research stay abroad.
