Political Affairs Officer

About the role

The Political Affairs Officer supports the United Nations Representative to the Geneva International Discussions (UNRGID) in Geneva, contributing to the implementation of the UN mandate within the Geneva International Discussions and the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM). The position is based at a “H” family duty station and involves regular travel and extended stays in the region of responsibility.

Key responsibilities

• Work closely with team members to implement UNRGID’s mandate.
• Provide substantive advice to the UN Representative/Co‑Chair on UN engagement in the Geneva Discussions and the IPRM.
• Monitor political, security and humanitarian developments in the region and deliver early‑warning analysis.
• Produce analytical reports, background papers, thematic concepts, and official correspondence.
• Organise bilateral and joint visits of the UN Representative/Co‑Chair, coordinating with EU and OSCE Co‑Chairs.
• Coordinate preparation, logistics and briefing materials for the rounds of the Geneva International Discussions.
• Prepare and participate in IPRM meetings, drafting agendas, conclusions, press statements and ensuring follow‑up.
• Maintain operational liaison with IPRM participants, Geneva International Discussions partners, EU, OSCE and local/international actors.

Required profile

• Proven ability to work collaboratively with international teams and partners.
• Experience providing political advice and analysis in a multilateral setting.
• Familiarity with political, security and humanitarian issues in the region.
• Strong written communication skills for reports, briefings and official documents.
• Organisational competence to coordinate visits, meetings and logistical arrangements.
• Capacity to maintain liaison with UN agencies, EU, OSCE and other stakeholders.
