R&D Engineer – Power Supply Validation

About the role

ABB is seeking an R&D Engineer to lead technical validation and customization of OEM low‑voltage Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and related accessories. Based in Quartino, Switzerland, you will work within a hybrid model, collaborating with internal teams and external test partners to ensure compliance with mission‑critical power protection standards.

Key responsibilities

• Lead validation and customization of single‑phase and three‑phase low‑voltage UPS, batteries, and accessories.
• Manage test partners (e.g., UL, Intertek, Dekra, Eurofins) to plan and execute compliance testing against IEC and UL standards.
• Maintain product specifications, support business case development, and drive root‑cause analysis for qualification and field issues.
• Stay informed on emerging UPS technologies and collaborate with ABB’s research centre and other stakeholders.

Required profile

• Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
• At least two years of professional experience in electrical engineering, preferably with power electronic systems.
• Experience working with external laboratories and certification bodies.
• Fluent in spoken and written English.

Required skills

• Power electronic systems design and testing.
• Use of laboratory measuring equipment.
• Knowledge of IEC and UL product regulations and standards.
• Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and failure investigation.
• Familiarity with Engineering Change Notifications (ECNs) and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
• Agile methodology (advantage).
