Senior Java Engineer - Cloud-Native Backend Development

About the role

Julius Baer is looking for a senior Java engineer to lead the redesign of a critical cloud‑native backend system. The role involves modernising a large‑scale legacy application and delivering high‑throughput services in a regulated financial environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the complete re‑architecture of the backend using Java 21+ and Spring Boot.
• Build scalable, resilient micro‑services on AWS, Azure or GCP and migrate existing monoliths.
• Design and implement asynchronous processing with Kafka or RabbitMQ, caching with Redis or Caffeine, and workflow engines such as Flowable or Camunda.
• Ensure API security with OAuth2, JWT, TLS and integrate RESTful and gRPC services.
• Apply AI‑assisted development tools to accelerate delivery while maintaining quality.

Required profile

• 8+ years of server‑side Java development, preferably in finance or other regulated high‑performance domains.
• Strong problem‑solving mindset and ability to communicate technical trade‑offs.
• Experience working in agile, cross‑functional teams and mentoring junior engineers.
• Business‑fluent English (C1/2).

Required skills

• Java 21+, Spring Boot, Spring Data, Spring Security, Spring Cloud.
• Message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ) and caching solutions (Redis, Caffeine).
• Workflow/BPMN frameworks (Flowable, Camunda) or streaming platforms (TIBCO StreamBase, Spotfire).
• Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), Docker, Kubernetes, service mesh.
• RESTful APIs, gRPC, OAuth2, JWT, TLS, Micrometer, OpenTelemetry.
• AI‑assisted development tools.
