Assistant Departmental Safety Officer

About the role

The Assistant Departmental Safety Officer (ADSO) supports the Departmental Safety Officer in implementing the EN Department’s safety policy at CERN. The role focuses on identifying, preventing and monitoring risks linked to activities, infrastructure and equipment while ensuring compliance with regulations and fostering a strong safety culture.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse accidents and hazardous situations and help define corrective and preventive actions.
• Assist the Departmental Safety Officer in rolling out safety actions across the department.
• Participate in organising planned evacuations and in post‑exercise feedback and lessons‑learned activities.
• Draft and communicate prevention and safety‑awareness messages.
• Take part in safety inspections and on‑site visits to verify compliance and identify improvement areas.
• Contribute to monitoring action plans and promoting a strong safety culture.

Required profile

• Maximum two years of professional experience in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field since graduation.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
• Never held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
• National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• Fluent in spoken and written English with a willingness to learn French.

Required skills

• Good knowledge of the main occupational health and safety risks.
• Proficiency with office software tools, specifically Microsoft Word and Excel.

What we offer

• Fixed‑term contract of 24 months, extendable up to 36 months.
• Full‑time onsite work (40 hours/week) at CERN, Geneva.
