Backend Engineer

About the role

QA is hiring a Backend Engineer for its headquarters in Mendrisio, Switzerland, about 7 km from the Italian border and easily reachable from Milan, Como, Varese or Lugano. The role takes end-to-end ownership of product and feature delivery, from system design and backend architecture to integration with infrastructure, observability of shipped code and the best practices that keep the team moving fast and sustainably. It also helps shape how AI is integrated into the workflow and products, as both a productivity tool and a capability built for users. The position is hybrid remote.

Key responsibilities

• Play a key role in QA's shift to an AI-first ecosystem
• Write well-structured, maintainable, idiomatic code with good documentation, unit tests for every feature, bug fixing and code reviews
• Collaborate with front-end developers, UI/UX designers and product managers to deliver new features quickly
• Work with the SRE team so that deployments run smoothly and errors are logged with enough information to debug
• Contribute to the Backend Chapter, taking part in technical discussions and cross-team activities

Required profile

• Solid experience coding with backend programming languages; Kotlin and/or Python is an advantage
• Effective use of AI tools in the workflow (IDE assistants, chat-based tools) with the ability to review, challenge and validate AI-generated code
• Experience with relational databases; PostgreSQL and Redis are an advantage
• Good level of spoken and written English
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a sense of urgency and integrity

• Git (GitHub and/or Bitbucket)
• RESTful APIs, WebSocket, GraphQL (advantage)
• Docker, AWS or Azure (advantage)
• Cloud architecture patterns, event-driven architectures and observability (log monitoring, error tracking, APM) (advantages)
• Nice to have: e-learning projects, hands-on AI features such as LLM integrations and RAG, and running AI products in production
