Commercial Manager – Construction Projects

About the role

Mercury, the European leader in construction solutions, is looking for a Commercial Manager in Zurich. The company builds and manages complex engineering and construction projects for leading corporations, covering enterprise data centres, advanced technology and life sciences, hyperscale data centres and fire protection. The role covers validation of budgets, tender and contract management, cost control and client relations.

Key responsibilities

• Validate all tender and construction budgets to ensure strict compliance with agreed margins.
• Advise Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors and Administrators on site instructions, labour allowances, forecasting methods and margin protection.
• Work with Procurement to run the tender process in line with company guidelines on authority to let, sub-contractor agreements and budget.
• Oversee monthly cost reports and month-end reviews, and liaise fully with the Business Unit Finance Department.
• Take part in preparing and reviewing contracts and tenders, assess sub-contractor and supplier variations, and manage the contract programme and schedule.
• Prepare and submit interim payment certificate applications and agree them with the Client Representative.
• Manage insurance needs and settlements, including public liability, professional indemnity and contract works.
• Manage disputes and claims together with the Commercial Manager and external consultants, and review incoming correspondence from employers, design teams and subcontractors.
• Manage project cash flow with Finance, ensure the project team follows internal procedures and the agreed authority matrix, and set up the project's risk and opportunity management process.
• Maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and consultants, mentor commercial staff and make recommendations to senior project staff.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years' experience in a QS/commercial role; ideally in a commercial leadership role on large-scale projects or data centres.
• Previous experience in construction operations.
• Professional qualification in quantity surveying, or an experienced engineer with commercial responsibilities.
• Good legal awareness and competence in assessing contract documents and contract requirements.
