Data Analyst – Beam Instrumentation

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Data Analyst with a strong physics background to join the Beam Instrumentation Group responsible for the LHC Longitudinal Density Monitor (BSRL). You will lead the development and optimisation of online and offline data processing pipelines that are critical for LHC experiment calibration and beam physics analysis.

Key responsibilities

• Redesign and optimise Python‑based online and offline data analysis software for scalability, performance and reproducibility.
• Develop specialised offline analysis routines, cross‑correlating BSRL data with other beam instrumentation.
• Extend diagnostics tools and implement automated notification systems for early detection of instrument issues.
• Design software, calibration routines and data pipelines for rapid commissioning after Long Shutdown 3 (LS3).
• Contribute to validation and performance verification of upgraded hardware planned for LS3.
• Benchmark upgrade scenarios using historical run data and physics‑based simulations.

Required profile

• Proven experience analysing complex experimental data, preferably from large‑scale scientific installations.
• Strong software development background with emphasis on clean, maintainable code.
• Basic experience with Monte Carlo‑based physics simulations and laboratory work.
• Eligibility: national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State with a Master’s (2‑6 years post‑grad experience) or PhD (≤3 years post‑grad experience) in Applied Physics, Data Analytics or related field.

Required skills

• Python programming.
• Scientific Python stack (NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, etc.).
• Version control systems (Git/GitLab).
• Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) concepts.
• Monte Carlo simulation techniques.
• Basic knowledge of photon‑counting techniques (advantageous).
