Java Backend Developer (12-Month Contract)

About the role

Julius Baer is looking for a senior backend and distributed systems engineer with extensive experience designing, building and operating mission-critical financial systems. The team is also building a new channel that brings investment capabilities directly to external clients through integration with the e-banking platform, and engineers will help shape its architecture and operational model from an early stage. This is a 12-month contract role paid through an external agency payroll provider.

Key responsibilities

• Design and evolve robust distributed systems, balancing scalability, latency, consistency and fault tolerance
• Apply distributed systems principles such as consistency models, idempotency, back-pressure and resiliency patterns to real-world financial workloads
• Develop and maintain high-performance backend services and APIs using Java, Spring and Spring Boot
• Optimize end-to-end latency, asynchronous processing and efficient I/O, and resolve bottlenecks through profiling, benchmarking and load testing
• Integrate complex financial platforms and third-party services, ensuring correctness, data integrity and operational resilience
• Build backend services for client-facing wealth and investment capabilities within the e-banking ecosystem
• Design reliable messaging and integration flows using JPA, JDBC templates, JMS and event-driven patterns
• Write clean, maintainable code following best practices, including code reviews, testing and CI/CD
• Work with product managers, designers and other stakeholders to turn requirements into technical specifications

Required profile

• Senior-level engineer with strong ownership and a production mindset
• Ability to work independently and in a global team with colleagues in Zurich and Singapore
• Willingness to collaborate in an agile environment; previous financial industry experience is a plus

Required skills

• Java (core, collections, JSON, JDBC), Spring Framework and Spring Boot
• Distributed systems, microservices, event-driven design and low-latency systems
• JPA, JDBC, relational databases, JMS, OAuth2, API security and IAM concepts
• Unix/Linux, bash scripting, and preferably Microsoft Azure
• Containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
