Java Engineer – HPC Cluster Development & Maintenance

About the role

Julius Baer is looking for a Java Engineer to help advance its High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure, which powers a state-of-the-art trading floor. The hybrid platform spans hundreds of on-premises servers and cloud resources in Microsoft Azure. The cluster scheduling and control systems are built in Java with Apache Ignite as the clustering layer, and jobs come from internal clients via legacy HTTP and ActiveMQ interfaces, while modern clients use an in-house Java and Python API. Statistics are collected in MongoDB and Elastic/Kibana.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and improve Java-based cluster scheduling and control systems, ensuring high availability and reliability of HPC resources.
• Develop a deep understanding of a large existing codebase and propose improvements.
• Maintain and enhance monitoring systems for infrastructure and client job submissions.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to balance resource allocation with business requirements.
• Troubleshoot and optimize performance across on-prem and Azure-augmented environments.
• Ensure compliance with banking regulatory requirements.

Required profile

• Strong Java development expertise (core and enterprise-level).
• Experience with distributed systems.
• Fluent English; German is a plus.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, in an agile setting, and with minimal direction.

Required skills

• Apache Ignite, ActiveMQ, NoSQL databases, and front-end web technologies (legacy UI maintenance)
• Python for APIs and tooling
• Familiarity with Azure Portal, Azure SDK for Java and Red Hat Linux
• Bonus: Scala, C++, Kubernetes, and Java multithreaded development
