Mechanical Design Engineer – Advanced Manufacturing

About the role

Coherent Corp. Zurich is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to create and develop advanced manufacturing tooling, fixtures, and production systems for cutting‑edge semiconductor laser technologies. This hands‑on role covers the full product lifecycle from concept and CAD design through prototype builds, pilot production, and release into high‑volume manufacturing.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, document, and release complex industrial systems used in semiconductor laser manufacturing.
• Design complete manufacturing systems, including mechanical assemblies, pneumatics, vacuum and cooling solutions, and production tooling.
• Create detailed engineering drawings, bills of materials, and technical release packages.
• Manage component procurement and coordinate with suppliers throughout development.
• Build and implement pilot production equipment, prototypes, and manufacturing fixtures.
• Support ongoing process development and continuous‑improvement activities.
• Troubleshoot equipment and process challenges, delivering practical engineering solutions.
• Collaborate with internal engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams as well as external partners.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
• Or a technical apprenticeship in Mechanical Design, Polymechanics, Mechatronics, or a related field.
