Mechanical Design Engineer - Semiconductor Laser Tooling

About the role

Coherent Corp. Zurich, a research and production hub for advanced photonics, engineered materials and high-power semiconductor laser technologies, is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer. You will design and develop manufacturing tooling, fixtures and production systems for semiconductor laser technologies, working from concept and CAD design through prototype builds, pilot production equipment and release into manufacturing. The role is onsite in Zurich and is permanent and full-time.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, document and release complex industrial systems used in the manufacture of semiconductor laser technologies.
• Design complete manufacturing systems, including mechanical assemblies, pneumatics, vacuum systems, cooling solutions and production tooling.
• Create detailed manufacturing documentation, engineering drawings, bills of materials and technical release packages.
• Manage component procurement and coordinate with suppliers throughout development.
• Develop and implement pilot production equipment, prototypes and manufacturing fixtures.
• Support process development and continuous improvement, and troubleshoot equipment and process challenges.
• Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing and operations teams, as well as external suppliers and partners.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related field; alternatively a technical apprenticeship in Mechanical Design, Polymechanics or Mechatronics followed by further education as an HF or FH engineer.
• 2-3 years of experience designing manufacturing equipment, production tooling or special-purpose machinery.
• Fluent German (minimum C1) and basic working proficiency in English.
• Ability to manage projects independently and strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Required skills

• Strong CAD experience, preferably SolidWorks.
• Knowledge of pneumatics, vacuum technology, cooling systems or industrial manufacturing equipment.
• Basic understanding of electrical engineering and electromechanical systems.
