Mechanical Engineer - Quantum Systems

About the role

ZuriQ is a quantum computing startup spun out of ETH Zürich, developing scalable quantum computers based on its own Penning trap architecture. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will work with the hardware team to build quantum computers from the ground up and bring them into operation at a new laboratory site, combining quantum physics and precision mechanical engineering.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, develop and design mechanical assemblies and prototypes
• Work with experimental physicists to turn scientific requirements into engineering solutions
• Analyse projects, including scheduling, cost estimation and feasibility assessments
• Produce detailed engineering drawings for manufacturing and maintain design documentation
• Perform engineering calculations and FEM structural analyses, advise on design and assess material requirements
• Procure components and coordinate with manufacturing partners
• Define test criteria, evaluate test results and derive design improvements

Required profile

• Degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics or a related field
• At least 3 years of professional experience in mechanical engineering or a related field
• Ability to manage projects independently from concept to manufacturing readiness
• Good command of German and English, and strong teamwork skills
• Nice to have: UHV, cryogenic, superconducting magnets or cleanroom experience; knowledge of 3D printing, electronics, IT or optics; hands-on manufacturing or assembly experience

Required skills

• Strong CAD proficiency (Autodesk Inventor is an advantage)
• Understanding of mechanical design principles
• Basic knowledge of thermodynamics, vibration damping and static and dynamic calculations
