Mechanical Technician – Cooling Systems

About the role
The EP-ATL-PO section at CERN is preparing for Long Shutdown 3 (2026‑2030). As a Mechanical Technician you will support the installation, testing, commissioning and operation of complex cooling systems that use water, CO₂, nitrogen and other process gases for the upgraded ATLAS detector.
Key responsibilities
- Remove, disassemble, and re‑install cooling system components.
- Manufacture, test and install piping, manifold boxes and related hardware.
- Perform maintenance, repairs, testing and modifications on major cooling equipment.
- Troubleshoot issues and develop repair solutions.
- Implement safety measures on all work sites.
- Prepare and execute acceptance tests.
Required profile
- Initial experience in piping system assembly and basic metalwork.
- Basic knowledge of cooling equipment and fluid handling.
- Some experience with basic machining and electrical wiring is a plus.
- Maximum two years of professional experience since graduation in electromechanical engineering or related field.
- Eligibility: national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State, no prior CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Required skills
- Mechanical assembly of cooling structures.
- Piping system assembly and manifold fabrication.
- Reading and interpreting Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID).
- Basic metalworking and machining techniques.
- Handling of water, CO₂, nitrogen and process gases.
- Fundamental electrical wiring and system connections.
