PhD Position: Modeling and Control of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems from Data

About the role

The Chair in Nonlinear Dynamics at ETH Zurich is looking for a 100% PhD student in Zurich to develop and apply nonlinear dynamical systems methods for complex physical problems that are known only from data. The goal is to offer an efficient, theoretically sound, fast and directly interpretable alternative to the black-box approach of neural networks. The position is fixed-term.

Key responsibilities

• Develop spectral submanifold (SSM) methods and advance concepts in nonlinear model reduction.
• Explore research directions such as nonlinear modelling and control for fluid-structure interactions, materials with memory, soft robotics, tele-operated systems, lightweight space structures and turbulent flows.
• Work in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering or the Department of Mathematics, depending on the candidate's background and preferences.

Required profile

• Masters degree in mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, physics or a related field.
• Strong mathematical skills, evidenced by high grades and tested in technical interviews.
• Prior research experience in fluid mechanics, structural vibrations, model reduction or control is expected.
• Experience in nonlinear dynamical systems methods and data-driven analysis is a plus.
