Safety and Controls Engineer – CMS Experiment

About the role

Join the CERN team working on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment to design, develop, test, procure, implement, operate and commission PLC‑based SCADA systems for detector control (DCS) and environmental safety and protection (SEP). The role focuses on the High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) upgrade, ensuring safe and stable operation under extreme conditions.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate HGCAL experts to maintain coherence across procurement, construction, commissioning and operation phases.
• Finalize hardware development, procurement and implementation for HGCAL SEP, including PLCs, environmental sensors and multiplexers.
• Develop the DCS software tree for monitoring and control, enabling rapid issue identification by non‑experts.
• Commission and operate the full HGCAL underground system, including thermal screen and cooling feedback control.
• Create and test action matrices for safe operation at all system levels.
• Maintain up‑to‑date documentation and integrate HGCAL DCS/SEP into the central CMS system.

Required profile

• Master’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Proven experience in design, implementation, testing, operation and maintenance of large PLC‑based control systems.
• Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams and manage complex hardware projects.
