Senior Java Developer - Distributed Financial Systems

About the role

Julius Baer is looking for a senior backend and distributed systems engineer with extensive experience designing, building and operating mission-critical financial systems. The role is 100% and runs on a 12-month contract through an external payroll partner with immediate start, with possible extension. The team is also building a strategic new channel that brings investment capabilities directly to the bank's external clients through integration with the e-banking platform.

Key responsibilities

• Design and evolve robust distributed systems, balancing scalability, latency, consistency and fault tolerance
• Apply distributed systems principles such as consistency models, idempotency, back-pressure and resiliency patterns to real financial workloads
• Develop and maintain high-performance backend services and APIs using Java, Spring and Spring Boot
• Optimize end-to-end latency, asynchronous processing and efficient I/O, and resolve bottlenecks through profiling, benchmarking and load testing
• Integrate complex financial platforms and third-party services, ensuring correctness, data integrity and operational resilience
• Build backend services for client-facing wealth and investment capabilities within the e-banking ecosystem
• Design messaging and integration flows using JPA, JDBC templates, JMS and event-driven patterns
• Write clean, maintainable code following best practices, including code reviews, testing and CI/CD
• Work with product managers, designers and other stakeholders to turn requirements into technical specifications

Required profile

• Java, Spring and Spring Boot, with strong production mindset and end-to-end ownership
• Comfortable acting as a technical authority in complex, globally distributed environments
• Previous experience in the financial industry is a plus
• Willingness to collaborate in a global team with members in Zurich and Singapore
• Analytical problem solver with a performance- and quality-driven approach, able to work in an agile environment

• JPA, JDBC, relational databases, JMS, OAuth2, API security and IAM concepts
• Unix/Linux, bash scripting, and preferably Microsoft Azure
• Containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines
