Senior Java Engineer - Cloud-Native Backend Development

About the role

Julius Baer is looking for a Senior Java Engineer to lead the design and development of a critical cloud-native backend system as part of a strategic initiative to modernise a large-scale legacy application. The role is 100% remote, on a 12-month contract with immediate start and possible extension, paid through an external payroll partner.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a complete re-architecture using modern Java technologies, primarily Spring Boot
• Build scalable, resilient services from the ground up
• Develop and operate high-throughput, distributed systems in a cloud environment
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery without compromising quality
• Act as a technical leader in complex transformation programmes

Required profile

• 8+ years of experience in server-side Java development, ideally in financial or other regulated, high-performance domains
• Deep expertise in enterprise-grade Java backends, cloud platforms and performance optimisation
• Experience building, operating and refactoring cloud-native microservices, including migrating monolithic systems
• Business-fluent English (C1/C2)
• Preferred: experience in the Markets and/or Trading business domain

• Java 21+ and the Spring ecosystem (Spring Boot, Spring Data, Spring Security, Spring Cloud)
• Asynchronous processing, message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ) and caching (Redis, Caffeine)
• Workflow and BPMN frameworks (Flowable, Camunda) or streaming/analytics platforms (TIBCO StreamBase, Spotfire)
• Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), Docker, Kubernetes, service mesh
• RESTful APIs, gRPC, protocol buffers, OAuth2, JWT, TLS
• Micrometer and OpenTelemetry for observability
• AI-assisted development workflows and mentoring junior engineers in agile teams
