Senior Python Software Engineer

About the role

Ontinue is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join its engineering team in Zurich and help build the technology behind its AI-powered MXDR service. This is a hands-on, backend-focused role mainly using Python and Azure, building distributed systems, services and automation that support security operations. The engineer takes ownership of problems from start to finish, working closely with Product, Engineering and Security Operations.

Key responsibilities

• Own work from idea to production: understand the problem, shape the solution, build and test it, and stay involved once running.
• Build backend systems in Python on Azure, including cloud-native services, APIs, event-driven systems and automation.
• Work with Product and Security Operations to turn user needs into practical engineering solutions.
• Design systems that handle failures, retries, concurrency, asynchronous processing and external dependencies.
• Use AI coding tools thoughtfully, reviewing and challenging their output.
• Build meaningful tests covering expected behaviour, edge cases, failure scenarios and security boundaries.
• Help monitor services, investigate production issues and contribute to incident response and on-call arrangements.
• Review code and designs, share knowledge, mentor colleagues and improve engineering practices, tooling and CI/CD.
• Collaborate regularly with the Zurich team and work with colleagues internationally.

Required profile

• 6+ years of software engineering experience.
• Strong experience building and running backend services in production.
• Good product judgement and the ability to explain technical decisions to technical and non-technical colleagues.
• Experience using AI coding assistants or agents, with the ability to review, debug and challenge their output.
• Strong debugging skills across application code, services, data and infrastructure.
• Fluency in English and willingness to work from the Zurich office two days per week.

Required skills

• Excellent Python, including testing, typing, dependency management and asynchronous programming.
• Distributed systems, event-driven architectures, APIs, data persistence and failure handling.
• Cloud-native applications on Azure, or another major cloud platform with interest in learning Azure.
• Git, CI/CD, automated testing, observability and secure software development.
• Nice to have: cybersecurity, SOAR, Sentinel, Defender, Graph, Entra ID, Terraform, GitHub Actions, monorepos, trunk-based development, and building AI capabilities into production services.
