Senior Software Engineer Lab Automation

About the role

Roche is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to bridge software development and laboratory automation. You will work within the Computational Sciences Center of Excellence to enable data‑driven science across research and early development.

Key responsibilities

• Design, program and troubleshoot high‑throughput lab workflows, building orchestration systems and hardware abstraction layers.
• Implement logging, metrics and alerts for hardware/software failures and develop automated error‑handling using vision models.
• Maintain a digital representation of the lab, integrating instruments via APIs with LIMS and ELNs.
• Manage hardware requirements, site constraints and reagent selection from design to deployment.

Required profile

• 5+ years of software engineering experience with hardware integration.
• Hands‑on experience with commercial liquid‑handling or lab automation platforms and robotic manipulators.
• Familiarity with molecular biology, biochemistry or wet‑lab workflows.
• Prototyping skills including CNC milling, laser cutting and CAD.

Required skills

• C# or Python programming.
• API/SDK integration with laboratory equipment.
• Computer vision tools such as OpenCV, YOLO or SAM.
• AI/ML model development, including reinforcement or imitation learning for robotics.
• Knowledge of sensors, microcontrollers and task‑and‑motion planning.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure and digital twin simulation.
