Staff Software Engineer - Robotics Platform

About the role

Gravis Robotics is a Series A start-up that brings physical AI to the construction industry, turning heavy construction machines into autonomous robots. Its RACK is a retrofit kit adding autonomy to excavators and wheel loaders, paired with a tablet and Copilot software so an operator can run a machine manually, with AI assistance or fully autonomously. As a robotics platform staff software engineer, you will help shape and implement a scalable, safe and high-performing robotics platform, gathering requirements, architecting the communication layer, node orchestration, lifecycle management and APIs, and focusing on the design, implementation and maintenance of core parts of the on-robot platform.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with engineers from other teams to derive requirements and shape the robotics platform vision
• Derive roadmaps that incorporate business needs and handle conflicting timelines and requirements
• Design, build and maintain parts of the platform, such as health monitoring and machine configuration management
• Guide junior team members and monitor external dependencies and alternatives
• Influence and grow the engineering culture
• Contribute upstream to open source projects and engage with the robotics community

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related field
• 7+ years of hands-on experience in software engineering, robotics development or similar roles
• Track record of leading high-impact projects across teams

Required skills

• Strong software engineering skills and experience with tooling such as clangd, cargo and pyrefly
• Systems languages such as C++ or Rust; Python is a plus
• Middleware (iceoryx2, DDS, AUTOSAR Adaptive) and IDLs (FlatBuffers, Protobuf)
• Nice to have: safety-critical systems experience, production-grade robotics systems, open source contributions, and production Rust
