Technician in Electron Microscopy (80-100%)

About the role

Empa, a research institution of the ETH Domain with about 1,100 employees, is looking for a technician in electron microscopy (80-100% time) to join a small research and support group. The role provides services to internal and external partners in academia and industry, and suits someone who enjoys delicate electron-optical instrumentation, troubleshooting devices and working in an agile, independent way.

Key responsibilities

• Operate the centre's electron microscopes and sample preparation facilities
• Carry out preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnostics and basic repairs of microscopy equipment
• Coordinate more complex repairs and servicing with instrument manufacturers and external service providers
• Introduce and train users on the tools and methods
• Take part in scientific projects
• Provide electron-microscopy services to internal and external customers

Required profile

• Practical experience operating and maintaining electron microscopes and related sample preparation methods
• Familiarity with small electro-mechanical devices
• Attention to detail and a perfectionist approach
• Eagerness to learn new characterisation methods and their applications
• Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory; German is desired
