Linux System Administrator – Accelerator Data Centre

About the role

CERN is seeking an experienced Linux System Administrator to manage critical server hardware in the accelerator data centre. You will ensure the 24/7 availability of core control‑system services that keep the particle accelerators running efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Administer Linux computers used in accelerator control (control‑room consoles, data‑centre servers, real‑time embedded platforms, virtual machines).
• Investigate, diagnose and resolve operational problems together with equipment specialists and operations teams.
• Manage data‑centre infrastructure, including servers, racks, networking, power and cooling.
• Maintain desktop computers in control rooms and technical buildings.
• Oversee networked data‑storage systems and ensure proper backup procedures.
• Plan and coordinate annual installation work and replacement of obsolete equipment.
• Collaborate with IT engineers on CERN’s general IT infrastructure.
• Contribute to hardware specification definition for procurement of servers and desktops.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Strong knowledge of the Linux operating system and hands‑on administration experience.
• Proven experience operating computing infrastructures in a data‑centre environment.
• Experience installing and managing commercial server hardware.
