Machine Learning Scientist

About the role

Roche’s AI Biology & Translation (AIBT) team is seeking a (Senior) Machine Learning Scientist to lead the development of AI technologies for designing DNA and RNA sequences used in nucleic acid‑based medicines. You will work closely with Cell Therapy, Gene Therapy and Vaccine Oncology groups, translating biological questions into predictive and generative models.

Key responsibilities

• Build, train and fine‑tune machine‑learning algorithms to optimise nucleic‑acid therapeutics for active portfolio projects.
• Design candidate sequence libraries for lab‑in‑the‑loop optimisation cycles, analyse experimental readouts (e.g., MPRA, NGS) and iteratively update designs.
• Collaborate with wet‑lab scientists and project leads to incorporate therapeutic constraints into design algorithms.
• Present technical findings, candidate designs and model performance metrics to cross‑functional teams.
• Stay current with advances in biological sequence modelling and contribute to scientific publications.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Machine Learning) with 0‑4 years of post‑doctoral or industry experience.
• Demonstrated research impact at the interface of machine learning and molecular biology, evidenced by publications.
• Strong communication skills in English, able to engage both computational and experimental scientists.

Required skills

• Python programming.
• Deep‑learning frameworks, specifically PyTorch.
• Experience developing or fine‑tuning sequence‑to‑function models for DNA/RNA.
