Description du poste

About the role

CERN is looking for a Materials Engineer to join its Polymer Laboratory within the Superconducting Magnet Technology section. You will help develop and qualify advanced polymer and composite materials for high-field superconducting magnets, taking part in their design, validation and implementation. The position is based in Geneva, on a 24-month contract (extendable up to 36 months) with a hybrid working arrangement.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop novel polymer and composite materials for superconducting magnets, focusing on cryogenic operation, high-voltage insulation and radiation resistance.
  • Design and validate manufacturing and processing techniques for magnet insulation systems.
  • Identify material technologies and processing techniques and establish new experimental capabilities in the laboratory.

Required profile

  • Nationality of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • Professional background in Material, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering (or a related field).
  • A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation experience, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation experience.
  • No previous CERN fellow or graduate contract.
  • Valid driving licence; night, Sunday and holiday work when required; medical clearance needed due to occupational health risks.

Required skills

  • Material characterisation (mechanical, thermal or chemical analysis) and composite or polymer processing experience.
  • Knowledge of materials science and material testing.
  • Knowledge of superconducting magnet construction or of materials for cryogenic, high-voltage or radiation environments is an asset.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams; spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

What we offer

  • Monthly net stipend of 6,372 or 7,004 Swiss Francs depending on degree.
  • 30 days of paid leave plus 2 weeks annual closure.
  • Health insurance coverage for yourself, spouse and children, and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Family, child and infant allowances and a relocation package depending on circumstances.
