The position is based in Geneva, on a 24-month contract (extendable up to 36 months) with a hybrid working arrangement.
Key responsibilities
- Develop novel polymer and composite materials for superconducting magnets, focusing on cryogenic operation, high-voltage insulation and radiation resistance.
- Design and validate manufacturing and processing techniques for magnet insulation systems.
- Identify material technologies and processing techniques and establish new experimental capabilities in the laboratory.
Required profile
- Nationality of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- Professional background in Material, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering (or a related field).
- A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation experience, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation experience.
- No previous CERN fellow or graduate contract.
- Valid driving licence; night, Sunday and holiday work when required; medical clearance needed due to occupational health risks.
Required skills
- Material characterisation (mechanical, thermal or chemical analysis) and composite or polymer processing experience.
- Knowledge of materials science and material testing.
- Knowledge of superconducting magnet construction or of materials for cryogenic, high-voltage or radiation environments is an asset.
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams; spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
What we offer
- Monthly net stipend of 6,372 or 7,004 Swiss Francs depending on degree.
