Assistant for Special Needs Children (Preschool)

About the role

The Shadow Assistant supports the lead teacher in creating a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment for young children with special needs. The role involves classroom support, supervision, and individualized assistance to promote each child’s social, emotional and cognitive development.

Key responsibilities

• Support classroom instruction by assisting the lead teacher with daily lesson plans, learning activities and educational games.
• Monitor and engage children during classroom activities, playtime, meals and outdoor periods to ensure safety and promote positive behaviour.
• Assist with behaviour management by reinforcing classroom rules and guiding children in developing social and emotional skills.
• Prepare and organise learning materials, resources and displays to support hands‑on learning and creativity.
• Maintain a clean and safe environment, including sanitising toys, surfaces and equipment.
• Provide individualized support through one‑on‑one or small‑group assistance for children who need extra help.
• Observe children’s development and communicate observations or concerns to the lead teacher.
• Support daily routines such as arrivals, departures, toileting, meals and rest time, fostering independence.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or equivalent (required).
• Prior experience working with young children in an educational or care setting (preferred).
• Patience, empathy and the ability to respond calmly and kindly to children.
• Strong communication skills with children, teachers and parents.
• Team‑oriented mindset and willingness to follow guidance from the lead teacher.
• Observational skills to recognise developmental milestones or concerns.
• Cultural sensitivity and respect for diverse backgrounds and abilities.
