Assistant for Special Needs Children (Shadow Role)

About the role

The Shadow Assistant supports the lead preschool teacher in providing a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment for children with special needs. The role involves assisting with classroom instruction, supervising children, and offering individualized support to promote their social, emotional and cognitive development.

Key responsibilities

• Support classroom instruction by helping implement daily lesson plans and educational games.
• Supervise and engage children during activities, playtime, meals and outdoor periods.
• Assist with behavior management by reinforcing classroom rules and guiding social skills.
• Prepare and organize learning materials, resources and displays.
• Maintain a safe and clean environment, including sanitising toys and equipment.
• Provide one‑on‑one or small‑group support for children needing extra help.
• Observe children’s development and report progress or concerns to the lead teacher.
• Support daily routines such as arrivals, departures, toileting, meals and rest time.
• Model respectful, inclusive behaviour and promote positive interaction.
• Collaborate closely with the lead teacher and other staff members.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or equivalent (required).
• TKT Training Course certification.
• Prior experience working with young children in an educational or care setting (preferred).
• Patience, empathy and strong communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively and follow guidance.
• Observational skills to recognise developmental milestones.
• Creativity, enthusiasm and organizational ability.
• Adaptability to changing schedules and needs.
• Cultural sensitivity and respect for diverse backgrounds.
