Chief of Protocol

About the role

The Chief of Protocol leads the Protocol and Liaison Service within the Office of the Director‑General at the United Nations Office at Geneva. Reporting directly to the Director‑General, the role provides authoritative advice on protocol matters and oversees diplomatic liaison with Permanent and Observer Missions.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, direct and supervise protocol services and diplomatic liaison for Permanent and Observer Missions.
• Develop and maintain relations with Swiss Federal, Cantonal and Municipal authorities.
• Advise the Director‑General and UN entities on protocol and host‑country issues.
• Coordinate visits of Heads of State, Government officials and senior UN leaders to Geneva.
• Draft official correspondence on protocol matters for Missions and UN organisations.
• Organise visits of the Secretary‑General and Deputy Secretary‑General to Switzerland and abroad.
• Oversee procedures for appointment of new Permanent Representatives and presentation of letters of credence.
• Manage protocol services for major international conferences at the Palais des Nations and other venues.
• Provide leadership and full managerial responsibility for the Protocol and Liaison Service staff.
• Represent the Director‑General at official ceremonies in and outside Geneva as required.

Required profile

• Comprehensive knowledge of United Nations policies, procedures and operations.
• Ability to provide authoritative advice on protocol and diplomatic practice.
• Skill in navigating complex international and political environments with sensitivity.
• Strong attention to detail under pressure.
• Excellent interpersonal and influencing abilities coupled with political awareness.
