Experimental Physicist (Electrical Power-Device Physics)

About the role

ABB is hiring an Experimental Physicist (80–100%, f/m/d) at its research centre in Baden-Dättwil, reporting to the Research Team Manager – Power Device Physics. The role contributes to technology, software, product and system development through applied research in electrical power-device physics, with a focus on applied thermodynamics and thermal management, and a hybrid work model.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct applied research in electrical power-device physics, primarily applied thermodynamics and thermal management, and contribute to related multi-physics fields such as electromagnetism and fluid dynamics.
• Contribute to and lead research projects supporting energy transformation through innovative electrical power technologies and multi-physics solutions.
• Plan, set up and execute scientific experiments, drive research activities, generate intellectual property and write scientific publications.
• Work closely with scientists and engineers in the team, collaborate within the research centre, with universities and with global ABB divisions.

Required profile

• PhD in Physics or Mechanical Engineering.
• Background in heat and mass transfer and applied thermodynamics.
• Previous project management experience is essential.
• Hands-on laboratory experience and willingness to design, build and test prototypes independently.
• Strong communication and presentation skills in English, written and spoken.

Required skills

• Knowledge of electromagnetism is a plus; a list of publications should be submitted if available.
• Experience in multi-physics simulations, e.g. COMSOL and CFD.
