Job description

About the role

CERN's graduate programme offers a full-time, fully onsite position for a young mechanical design engineer interested in solving practical problems with mechanical systems. The MME group, within the Engineering Department, provides engineering solutions combining mechanical design, fabrication and material sciences, and historically maintains the know-how on beam accelerator components and physics detectors. You will join the Design Office responsible for mechanical design of accelerator and detector components such as superconducting magnets, cavities, vacuum systems and instrumentation, designing and developing components from concept to production under the supervision of a senior design engineer.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical components and systems from concept to production.
  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using CATIA V5, adhering to ISO GPS norms.
  • Carry out simple structural analysis and numerical calculations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in material science, manufacturing and quality assurance to ensure design feasibility and manufacturability.
  • Improve designs based on feedback and testing results, and take part in problem-solving and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of designs, modifications and project progress.

Required profile

  • Initial experience in mechanical design of components or assemblies.
  • Nationality of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • Maximum of two years of professional experience after graduation in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) by the application deadline, with a Bachelor's or Master's degree; applicants without a university degree or with a PhD are not eligible.
  • No previous CERN fellow or graduate contract.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French; ability to learn new languages.

Required skills

  • Proficiency in CAD software such as CATIA V5 for 3D and 2D drawings.
  • Strong understanding of ISO GPS norms and mechanical engineering principles (materials, manufacturing processes, structural behaviour).

What we offer

  • A monthly net stipend of 5,266 or 5,793 Swiss Francs depending on degree.
  • 30 days of paid leave plus 2 weeks annual closure, health insurance coverage and pension fund membership.
  • Family, child and infant allowances and a relocation package depending on circumstances.
  • Contract of 24 months, extendable up to 36 months, with on-the-job and formal training including language classes.
