Lab Automation Internship

About the role

Adaptyv is scaling its automated lab in Lausanne and needs a hands‑on intern to help build and run high‑throughput biology protocols. You will work at the intersection of software, hardware and wet‑lab processes, programming robots and troubleshooting equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute automated liquid‑handling protocols on Hamilton STAR and other robots using Python and open‑source tools such as PyLabRobot/PyHamilton.
• Support work‑cell operation: load runs, swap consumables, calibrate instruments and resolve jams or misreads.
• Write Python software for instrument drivers, integrations and data pipelines within the LabOS stack.
• Reverse‑engineer instrument communication by capturing traffic with tools like Wireshark or USB/serial sniffers.
• Run tests on new protocols and devices, document results and flag anomalies.
• Assist with physical setup: wiring new devices, organizing the work cell, preparing plates and reagents.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in engineering, robotics, mechatronics, computer science, bioengineering or a related field.
• Generalist maker mindset: enjoys building, disassembling and debugging software, electronics and mechanical systems.
• Self‑starter who identifies tasks and acts without waiting for direction.
• Organised and reliable with good note‑taking habits.

Required skills

• Proficient Python programming, including API usage, Git and debugging.
• Experience with open‑source lab automation libraries (e.g., PyLabRobot, PyHamilton) or willingness to learn.
• Familiarity with hardware communication tools such as Wireshark, USB/serial sniffers.
• Basic understanding of robotics, liquid‑handling instruments and laboratory workflows.
