Legal Officer – PCT Legal & User Support (Geneva)

About the role

The Legal Officer will join the PCT Legal and User Support Section in Geneva, providing expert legal advice on the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) to applicants, agents, Contracting States and other stakeholders. This fixed‑term position involves drafting regulatory amendments, analysing case statistics and supporting outreach and training activities to promote the PCT.

Key responsibilities

• Provide information, advice and assistance to PCT applicants, agents, Contracting States, industrial property offices and PCT authorities on PCT implementation.
• Support PCT Operations and other WIPO units with legal guidance on PCT matters.
• Draft and contribute to legal work related to improvements of the PCT system, including amendments to the Regulations, Administrative Instructions and Guidelines.
• Analyse market studies, identify growth opportunities and advise companies on strategic use of the PCT in collaboration with the PCT Marketing Specialist.
• Design, develop and deliver training courses, seminars and informational meetings for users and potential users, and prepare educational material on the PCT.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to align legal recommendations with outreach and marketing strategies.

Required profile

• Law degree with solid knowledge of international intellectual property law, especially the Patent Cooperation Treaty.
• Experience in legal drafting, regulatory analysis and providing advice to diverse stakeholders.
• Strong analytical abilities to monitor case statistics and conduct market analyses.
• Excellent communication skills in English; additional languages are an asset.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
