Legal Research Intern

About the role

The Legal Research Intern will support the Office of the Assistant Secretary General of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) in investigating serious crimes committed in Syria since 2011. The role offers a valuable opportunity to develop legal research, analysis and drafting skills within a UN accountability framework.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct targeted open‑source research in English and Arabic, analyse findings and draft summaries in English.
• Research and summarise political, economic, social, technological and legal issues related to the Syrian situation and provide input on colleagues’ documents.
• Perform legal research in English and Arabic, draft legal analyses and assist in finalising legal drafts.
• Compile research and analysis into papers and presentations for internal IIIM use.
• Complete assigned tasks on time, maintain confidentiality and work both independently and as part of a team.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or having completed the final year of a bachelor’s, master’s or Ph.D. programme, preferably in law or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Fluency in spoken and written English and knowledge of Arabic; French is a working language of the UN Secretariat.

Required skills

• Proficiency with standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS Outlook and MS Teams.
• Strong written communication skills in English for drafting legal and research documents.
