PhD Position in Experimental Nonlinear Dynamics and Nanomechanics
ETH Zurich · Zurich
Job description
About the role
A four-year PhD position in the Spin Physics group at ETH Zurich, in the field of experimental nonlinear dynamics and nanomechanics. The project asks whether artificial neural networks can be built from driven nonlinear resonators, using coupled Kerr parametric oscillators (KPOs) that act as bistable bits of memory. It combines experimental work with theory, with close collaboration with Prof. O. Zilberberg at the University of Konstanz.
Key responsibilities
- Build and operate a programmable network of coupled KPOs with up to eight nodes, including control and readout electronics and measurement software.
- Map attractor landscapes, switching statistics and probability currents from measured trajectories.
- Compare experiments with simulations and analytical models, publish and present results internationally.
Required profile
- MSc in physics, electrical engineering or a related field, with a solid background in nanomechanics, nonlinear dynamics or statistical physics.
- Enjoyment of hands-on experimental work and willingness to engage with some analytical theory.
- Good communication in English.
Required skills
- Electronics, signal processing and Python.
- Experience with MEMS, lock-in detection or FPGAs is a plus.
What we offer
- A four-year PhD position in an international, stimulating environment.
- Technical support from in-house electronics and FPGA experts.
- Close supervision with room for your own ideas.
- Employment following ETH Zurich standards, with a starting date by agreement.
Applications are submitted online through the university's application portal, with a CV, a short motivation letter, BSc and MSc transcripts and the contact details of two references.
