Senior Backend Python Engineer (German speaking, Freelance)

About the role

We are looking for a senior backend Python engineer who is fluent in German to join our AI‑focused startup in Switzerland on a 3‑6 month freelance basis. You will help design and deliver production‑grade backend services that power cutting‑edge language model applications.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend architectures and API frameworks using Python.
• Architect and implement seamless customer integrations and enterprise‑grade platform connections.
• Collaborate with AI, product, and infrastructure teams to embed large language models into reliable user‑facing applications.
• Optimize performance, ensuring low latency and efficient backend operations.
• Develop light frontend integrations when needed to support core backend functionality.
• Drive engineering quality through automated testing, code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, and continuous deployment.
• Lead technical design decisions and take full operational ownership of production features.

Required profile

• Fluent German language skills.
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, primarily backend development.
• Strong expertise in Python and modern backend frameworks.
• Experience building and managing REST APIs, microservices, and complex database structures.
• Familiarity with DevOps practices, containerisation (Docker), and scalable cloud deployment environments.
• Interest or prior exposure to AI/LLM technologies is a major asset.
• Ability to work autonomously in a fast‑paced startup environment.
