Applied Physicist/Engineer - ATLAS ITk Integration
CERN · Geneva
Job description
About the role
CERN's ATLAS Team is building the future silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk), which is assembled at CERN after being built and tested in institutes around the world. As an applied physicist or engineer in the Tracker section (EP-ATL-TRK), you will work with the institutes' teams to synchronise the integration testing of ITk parts on surface, support their integration and commissioning, and prepare the cavern commissioning. This is a fully onsite position in Geneva.
Key responsibilities
- Test and verify integrated ITk Strip Barrel and Endcap structures and services in the surface integration facility (SR1) at CERN.
- Work with integration sites such as DESY or NIKHEF, synchronise testing and provide troubleshooting support to integration teams, including at those sites.
- Develop software and hardware elements for integration testing of ITk Barrel and Endcaps in the integration sites and validate the procedures in SR1.
- Streamline and document ITk integration testing and service validation procedures, and extend them after installation and during commissioning.
- Take part hands-on in ITk integration in the ATLAS SR1 cleanroom and in ITk installation in the cavern, including preparing equipment in the cavern.
Required profile
- Master's degree, PhD or equivalent relevant experience in Applied Physics, Engineering or a related field.
- Proven experience integrating, testing and operating silicon detectors for high-energy physics experiments, and in integrating and commissioning silicon trackers with services validation.
- Demonstrated experience developing DAQ/online software or detector control systems for silicon detectors, and in developing and streamlining testing procedures.
- An advantage: previous work on particle detector operation in an experiment, and assembly of sensitive equipment in a clean room.
- Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
Required skills
- Testing and validation of detector, accelerator and beam line components.
- Assembly and integration of detectors.
- Construction, test and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems.
- Development of application software.
- Assembly and integration of infrastructure for detectors or experimental facilities.
What we offer
- Limited duration contract of 4 years, subject to conditions for applying for an indefinite position; possibility to extend up to 8 years.
- Competitive tax-free salary increasing with years of relevant experience.
- 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks annual closure.
- Health insurance coverage for yourself, spouse and children, and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
- Family, child and infant monthly allowances, and a relocation package depending on circumstances.
- Working hours of 40 per week; the role involves radiation areas, underground installations, night work, Sunday and holiday work, and requires a valid driving licence.
