Job description

About the role

CERN is recruiting an Applied Physicist or Engineer for the ATLAS ITk project, joining the Tracker section (EP-ATL-TRK) and working with the Detector Technologies Group on the construction and integration of the ATLAS ITk Pixel System. The role focuses on the final integration of the ITk detector before installation, in the surface cleanroom and testing facilities.

Key responsibilities

  • Receive and test ITk silicon pixel detector elements and multi-module pixel structures to be integrated into the outer barrel.
  • Test and verify integrated pixel detector structures and services, and run combined tests with the ITk strip detector in the SR1 surface integration facility.
  • Deploy and improve software and hardware for integration testing and service validation (online, detector control, detector safety).
  • Document test procedures and results, and develop testing procedures for the detector after installation.
  • Take part hands-on in detector integration in the cleanroom and prepare equipment for each testing stage.

Required profile

  • Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Applied Physics, Engineering or a related field.
  • Proven experience constructing and integrating silicon pixel detectors for high-energy physics experiments.
  • Proven experience testing and analysing data from silicon detector systems, and operating and quality controlling them, including installing and commissioning laboratory infrastructure.
  • Experience developing DAQ/online software or detector control systems for silicon detector testing.
  • Demonstrated experience in multi-disciplinary, international teams with physicists, engineers and technicians.
  • Spoken and written English; willingness to learn French.

The following are an advantage: interpreting CAD designs of mechanical components, cooling plant operation, and assembling sensitive equipment in a clean room.

Required skills

  • Testing and validation of detector, accelerator and beam-line components.
  • Assembly and integration of detectors.
  • Construction, test and installation of electromechanical equipment.
  • Development of application software.

What we offer

  • Limited-duration contract of 4 years, with possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract.
  • Competitive tax-free salary increasing with experience, 30 days paid leave plus 2 weeks annual closure.
  • Health insurance coverage for yourself, spouse and children, and membership of the CERN pension fund.
  • Family, child and infant allowances, and a relocation package depending on circumstances.
  • 40 hours per week, fully onsite, with work in radiation areas, underground installations and on nights, Sundays and holidays when required.
