Associate Human Rights Officer (Temporary Junior Officer)

About the role
The Associate Human Rights Officer supports the Special Procedures Branch of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva. Reporting to the Unit Coordinator and under the guidance of the Branch Chief, the incumbent conducts research, analysis and reporting on human‑rights issues, with a focus on gender dimensions, and assists in fact‑finding missions.
Key responsibilities
- Research and collect information on human‑rights matters from diverse sources, monitoring gender dimensions and emerging events.
- Analyse the impact of political, legal and socio‑economic developments on country and thematic mandates.
- Draft reports, correspondence and briefing notes for senior officials and mandate holders.
- Participate in sessions, consultations and training programmes, preparing concise summaries of outcomes.
- Liaise with governments, NGOs, civil‑society organisations, UN agencies and other partners to build baseline data on vulnerable groups.
- Support Special Rapporteurs, Independent Experts and Working Group members in preparing and following up on fact‑finding missions.
- Produce data visualisations (graphs, charts, tables) to highlight trends and inform decision‑making.
- Engage with other Human Rights Officers to integrate human‑rights considerations into political, humanitarian and economic programmes.
Required profile
- Strong knowledge of human‑rights principles, including gender, ethnic, racial and socio‑economic dimensions.
- Experience in researching, analysing and synthesising complex information.
- Ability to draft clear, concise reports and briefing documents.
- Excellent communication skills for interaction with diverse stakeholders.
- Familiarity with UN human‑rights mechanisms and the work of Special Procedures.
