Human Rights Officer – Investigator Coordinator

About the role

The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) is seeking a Human Rights Officer to coordinate investigative activities related to missing persons. The position is based in Geneva with the possibility of relocation to Damascus or another relevant location. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Search and Identification Section.

Key responsibilities

  • Review, monitor and evaluate the implementation of international human rights instruments and treaty‑body recommendations.
  • Prepare human‑rights sections of reports for the General Assembly, Human Rights Council and other UN bodies.
  • Liaise regularly with peacekeeping teams, UN staff, national officials, military and police to plan and review project activities.
  • Integrate human‑rights and gender dimensions into UN and NGO programmes; assist in designing and implementing human‑rights programmes.
  • Analyse information and evidence from investigations, review investigative briefs and recommend actions.
  • Coordinate with UN sectors, international organisations, governments and families of missing persons on case registration, participation and disclosure of findings.
  • Support the development and delivery of training programmes on human rights, international humanitarian law, democracy and the rule of law, with attention to gender perspectives.
  • Lead and supervise investigative activities, including collection, preservation and assessment of evidence and related administrative functions.

Required profile

  • Demonstrated knowledge of international human rights law, treaty bodies and UN human‑rights mechanisms.
  • Experience working with UN peacekeeping, military or police stakeholders and with NGOs on human‑rights programmes.
  • Ability to analyse complex investigative information and produce analytical products.
  • Strong coordination and communication skills with diverse international actors.
  • Willingness to relocate in accordance with UN regulations.
  • Fluency in English; additional languages are an asset.
