Hydrology Data Scientist
Riverkin · Zurich
Job description
About the role
Riverkin, a VC‑backed Swiss startup, is tackling flash‑flood risk with real‑time sensing and data infrastructure. We are looking for a Hydrology Data Scientist to design and launch the first machine‑learning model that can predict flash floods at the local scale.
Key responsibilities
- Define, build, and deploy the first flash‑flood ML model using proprietary sensor data and public sources.
- Implement models, manage large data sets, and monitor performance.
- Collaborate with software engineers to embed models into a scalable product.
- Architect the modelling pipeline, selecting models, sensors, and overall architecture.
- Translate client and business needs into a technical roadmap and keep abreast of nowcasting advances.
- Represent the team in field sensor installations and customer presentations.
- Provide structure to ambiguous problems and drive execution.
Required profile
- Passionate about solving flash‑flood challenges at the local level.
- Founder‑mindset: eager to act as an early‑stage team member and take ownership.
- Hands‑on, able to turn messy inputs into clear technical direction.
- Strong communicator with excellent written and verbal skills.
Required skills
- Experience applying ML tools (e.g., LSTM) to hydrological problems such as flooding.
- Experience in bias correction of weather radar data.
- MSc or PhD in hydrology, water‑resources management, atmospheric sciences, or equivalent.
- Experience with real‑world data systems (gauges, GIS, satellite imagery, etc.).
What we offer
- Full‑time (100% FTE) position with compensation commensurate with experience plus equity.
- Key early‑hire role with the opportunity to build and lead the flash‑flood modelling function.
- Hybrid work arrangement: 4 days per week onsite in our Zurich office.
